Childhood Counts in Mexico 2020

In 2020 there were 38.3 million girls, boys and adolescents in Mexico (49.3% women and 50.7% men); this represented 30.4% of the national population (INEGI, Census 2020).

In Mexico, 5.3 million people ages 3 to 17 were out of school in 2020; In the same year, the percentage of the population in this age range that did not attend school in the country was 16.4% (INEGI, Census 2020).

314 thousand adolescents between 12 and 17 years of the country were married or united in 2020; most of them and they were women (75.7%) (INEGI, Census 2020).

In Mexico, 154 thousand adolescent women between the ages of 12 and 17 were mothers in 2020; this corresponded to 2.4% of the total of women in this age range (INEGI, Census 2020).

In 2018, 49.6% of the population between 0 and 17 years of age in the country (50% of women and 49.2% of men) lived in poverty (CONEVAL, Poverty in Mexico 2018).

112 women from 0 to 17 years of age lost their lives due to femicide in the country during 2020. This corresponded to 11.6% of the total number of femicides that took place in 2020 at the national level (SESNSP, Victims of crimes 2015-2020).
