Child labor in Mexico 2019

At the national level, 3.26 million people between the ages of 5 and 17 were in child labor in 2019. This represented 11.5% of the population in that age range. 1.13 million of these girls, boys and adolescents carried out dangerous work (such as construction, agriculture or bars) and 1.51 million carried out dangerous or inappropriate household chores. In addition, 889 thousand people between the ages of 5 and 14 carried out an occupation under the minimum age. The State of Mexico (387,594), Puebla (282,675) and Chiapas (273,284) are the entities with the most cases of child labor. A quarter of the population of 15 to 17 years of the country is in a condition of child labor. 38.9%% of the population in child labor is women. The causes of child labor have many ramifications: the percentage of the employed population in rural areas is almost double that of urban areas; The proportion of people aged 5 to 17 who work also almost doubles when comparing households in which the male or female head studied / did not study until full primary school with households in which the male or female male head studied beyond primary school.
